Global Perspectives Blogging Series
A few days ago, we were introduced to a new project that we'll be working on for quite a while. Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be creating a kind of character profile of a classmate of mine, and getting to know their cultural background. Later on, I'll also be analyzing the issues they deal with regarding the culture they identify with. I'm working with Will for the span of this project. I can't wait to get started, so stick around and we'll see what happens!

Cultural Background/Religious Beliefs
Will's great-grandparents were originally from Germany, but moved to America, where the rest of his family has been since. His parents were born in Wisconsin, moving to Florida 2 years before he was born.
He, along with his family, is Christian, and grew up exposed to Christian beliefs and morals. He tries to attend a non-demoninational church every Sunday. I forgot to ask, but I'm assuming, based on this info, that he doesn't identify with a specific Christian denomination. I'm still a little curious- I'll ask him next time I remember.
As a result, Will celebrates Christmas and Easter.
Family/Experiences
Will is an only child, and currently lives with his mom and dog. His parents divorced when he was a year old, and his dad moved to Colorado with his step-mom. While he does seem pretty far away, Will visits often over Spring Break. Most of his relatives still live in Wisconsin, but some are in New York and Florida.
Only one grandparent is still alive and is in Sarasota, FL. I think it's nice that part of his family is close by so he can visit frequently.
He's traveled quite a bit (something I've always wanted to do but never get the chance to), especially to and from Colorado, presumably to visit his dad, amounting to about three times per year for as long as he can remember. There, he goes skiing every year. He's been to Europe three times- England twice. I was trying to so hard to conceal my excitement at this point; I've been wanting to visit England for so long now. The hills and scenery are absolutely breathtaking and they have the most charming little shops. I'd better stop now before I start rambling. Okay.
Will has also been on a cruise around the Mediterranean. I've never been on a cruise in my life (I think my mom has been scarred by the Titanic), so that'll be pretty interesting to hear more about.
Future…?
I think this was the most difficult part to talk about, simply because of the fact that no one at this age has any idea what they want to do with the rest of their life. There's the usual- get into a good college, get a job, raise a family. Then there's the unusual- Will wants to continue playing basketball throughout high school and potentially in college. It would also be nice if he could get into college on a basketball scholarship.
I was actually kind of surprised to hear that he already has an idea of what he wants to major in in college. Of course, this isn't definite, but he seems interested in the idea of majoring in business or banking. That's more than I can say for about 75% of our grade. Most people would probably reply with a shrug or a blank stare. It's nice to hear that at least one person has at least a temporary goal in life.
Another thing Will mentioned was traveling the world. This made me smile because this is an idea that we both share. He didn't say anything specific, though, so I assume he meant in general, but I was still really excited.
Overall, this was a fantastic interview, and I can't wait to see how the rest of this project turns out!
